05. Wizard Rock: discuss

Yay! Fun! Wizard Rock is awesome. I think it's fantastic that it exists, and that it has its own genre in iTunes omg what. I don't listen to a lot of it, but I confess to absolutely adoring Draco and the Malfoys. I mean, seriously: My Dad is rich, and your Dad is dead - you can stick last year's house cup up your crack - I'm gonna kick you in the face, might do it twenty-seven times just in case. I just. He's such a smarmy little bastard, and it's so fun and satisfying to listen and sing along to. Also, '99 Deatheaters' is made of win.

04. Your favorite movie

Goblet of Fire, no question. Sure, it has some problems - that stupidly long dragon sequence that amounted to little more than CGI masturbation (five minutes that might have been used to actually explain what Priori Incantatum was to non-book-fan viewers), but I loved Goblet so much. Rita, Rita, Rita is probably the main reason - she just oozed sex and bitchiness all over the place. I also loved the humour in this one, the real boarding school feel it had (especially with the Yule Ball), the way the Quidditch World Cup was handled. The ending was every bit as brutal as in the book, and possibly more so - the moment that Harry returns to Hogwarts with Cedric's body and the fanfare and cheers turn to screams chills me to the bone, right there with Amos Diggory's grief.

I also felt that that the story of the book was mostly in tact here. Sure, they cut out Rita-the-animagus, but her hilarious and awesome scenes more than made up for that. Snape revealing his Dark Mark to the Minster being cut made me sad, but I can sort of see how it would have taken away from the power of the ending in the visual text. SPEW being cut didn't bother me much at all, TBH. And I couldn't give a toss that Hermione's dress was pink instead of blue.

03. What house would you be in?

I am honestly not sure of the answer to this one. I have often wanted to join a sorting community, just so that people could tell me what house they thought I belonged in.

I'm kind of a wannabe Slytherin, I think, but I don't really think I am one. I have plenty of ambition, but I lack the drive to truly do something about it. I am loyal to my friends, but I am seriously lazy, so Hufflepuff doesn't fit either. I don't really think I'm a Gryffindor - I lack the impulsiveness and the passionate belief in my own moral superiority. I think the fact that I have overthought this so much over time probably points to Ravenclaw, though, yeah?

My friend had her baby yesterday! A boy, Ethan Conor. Both are doing well. Can't wait to see them :)

Also, Meme: day two

02. Your favorite book

Goblet of Fire. Restrospectively, at least. I tend not to be particularly discerning when actually reading - I get completely sucked into the story and, unless it's completely terrible, love it. I loved every single one of the HP books while reading. It was only later on that I began to notice the problems in each book as well.

But yes. Goblet, for certain. The plot is wonderful. It's chunky and that feels right for it - lots of stuff happens, unlike in OOTP, really. We get introduced to a whole bunch of new, interesting characters, thanks to the tournament, and the focus starts to become a little more about the world at large and less about Harry and his immediate circle of family/friends. We get the absolutely brutal climax with Cedric's death (kill the spare) and the revelation of Snape as a double agent.

Also, it has Rita Skeeter in it. And although I didn't love her the first time through, I'm sure it's fairly obvious to everyone how much of a hold she got on me later ;).

A little late to this party, but everyone else seems to be having fun with it (and I'm enjoying the answers). Also, procrastination is awesome.

01. Discuss how you got into Harry Potter

I first heard of Harry Potter while I was in high school, as the hype began to make its way to Australia and people were Talking About It. A number of my friends jumped on the boat, but I Wasn't Interested in Crazes, so I actively resisted knowing anything about it.

I managed it until the first film came out. I saw Philosopher's Stone tentatively, over my stepsister's shoulder, until I started shouting excitedly at the screen - Maggie Smith! Robbie Coltrane! Alan Rickman! Zoe Wanamaker! (Everyone else watching: shut up, will you? We don't care.) A mainstream film full of awesome British actors? Hell yes. I saw Chamber of Secrets in the cinema twice, at which point I melted into a pool of fangirly love over Lucius Malfoy.

I had been considering reading the books, then. Planning on it. We had the first three - people had bought them for my brother years earlier, hoping that they would entice him to read, like they had with other children. No dice, on that one. I'd picked up the first one but had only read a few pages when, out walking dogs one afternoon, I stepped in a pothole on a gravel road and twisted my foot like a great big twisted thing. So, thus unable to walk, I picked up PS and read it in a day. Then CoS, and then PoA, and after my hobbling return to school, borrowed GoF from the library. OotP was the first book I waited for.

As for fandom, well, that's actually equally as convoluted, but I'll try to keep it concise. On the CoS DVD, there was a link to a digital trading card game that I started playing. It was hosted on the WB website that also housed the AOL/WB message boards, which I eventually found my way to. Started discussing, started RPing, started writing fanfic. Found my way to LJ while looking for fans of Minerva McGonagall and other HP ladies. Found [livejournal.com profile] hp_oldladysb and a circle of like-minded fangirls. Was home.
