Big Pimp -- You Like Older Characters? Come Play!

We've had an absolutely massive weekend over at [livejournal.com profile] road_ahead. A benefit dance, and almost all of the played characters joined in. There were 802 comments when I last looked, and it's still going! Both of my girls had a great time, chatting and dancing and such, and Muriel has decided that cheeky George certainly brings out the worst in her.

While we were in a big group chat, the subject of older characters, and how we'd love to see more of them, came up. This is a character-based game that doesn't centre around Hogwarts, so there's no reason at all why older characters wouldn't have just as much to do as younger ones. As I said in chat - I'd take them all on, but then I'd have to play with myself, which really is no fun (in RP >.>)

I've taken this pretty much wholesale from [livejournal.com profile] inell, so thanks to her for being so well-worded and thorough.

General overview of RA:

The game is set post-DH (it's now March 1999 in-game, and it's nearing the year anniversary of the Battle at Hogwarts) and the students in Harry's years have just received their NEWTs scores. It's a period of transition for a lot of the characters, regardless of age. Students have finished school and are figuring out their future (careers, housing, what to do now that they're teetering on the edge of adulthood), and adults are gaining new co-workers and neighbors. The world is still dealing with the rebuilding after a war. Instead of homes and businesses, they're working on tolerance and acceptance, education and commerce. There are those who still object and easily believe anything the Prophet says, which Dolores Umbridge takes advantage of as she tries to stir up dislike towards Minister Shacklebolt and his Ministry. There are those who support change and are campaigning for a better world, who support Fleur Weasley's Association for Magical Equality and Diversity. Then there are those who are in-between who are forming opinions and finding their place in a post-war world. Voldemort might have died ten months ago, but the world is still recovering and growing as people keep moving forward.

We have older characters available at [livejournal.com profile] road_ahead that our cast would love to see played. In the chat this weekend, and the excitement at the prospect of casting these people was just fantastic. In this game, age means nothing. The focus is on characterization and interaction, so you can be 15 or 115 and still have things to develop and play and enjoy.

Aberforth Dumbledore, who got so much canon to develop and grow from that it'd be brilliant to read him in this post-war world where he ended up becoming a hero by helping Neville and the DA stay alive and where his past can be explored as we learn who he is and what he's like.

Xeno Lovegood, who suffered through being blackmailed and put in prison while not knowing if his daughter was alive or dead, and who has had deal with stress after being released from prison along with rebuilding his home and working towards rebuilding his newspaper, which is now printing the truth more than the Prophet often, and he's got a fantastic Luna who would love to have him around, as she's going to be finishing school in a few months and might work with him at the Quibbler as she figures out her life post-school.

Madam Rosmerta, who unwittingly played a part in the death of Albus Dumbledore and the cursing of Katie Bell and then was forced to run the pub in a town under curfew and heavily guarded by Death Eaters for nearly a year. Since the war, she's kept the pub going but how does she feel? What does she think about how events unfolded in the past and her part in them? All of these things and more can be explored while she meets people of all generations at the Three Broomsticks.

Mundungus Fletcher, who was part of the Order and saved himself during the effort to move Harry before the war even got started. How did he spend the DH year? What's he been doing since the war ended? How does he feel about losing so many more of his fellow Order members? Think of all the possibilities for him as he became active again and interacted with existing Order members and others.

Mafalda Hopkirk, who was a Ministry employee during three Minister's reign (Fudge, Scrimgeour, and Thicknesse) and is now working under the leadership of Shacklebolt. She endured the reign of a Voldemort-controlled Minister and Umbridge's Muggleborn Campaign, as well as finding herself the victim of polyjuice in order to steal from the Ministry. How is she dealing in this post-war world? What does she think of these new ideals and the youth that are applying for work in her department and others?

Augusta Longbottom, who is a recast that hasn't been played since January. Neville has recently finished school and is working with a small landscaping business while planning to go for a Mastery in Herbology. His relationship with his grandmother is very important to him, so he'd do a little dance if we recast her and we'd all love to see that! More importantly, she's on the Board of Governors at Hogwarts and is involved in the community, both politically and socially.

Professors/Staff: Horace Slughorn, Pomona Sprout, Septima Vector, Aurora Sinistra, Poppy Pomfrey, Argus Filch and others. Some have been previously played and others haven't. They went through a year with DEs teaching classes and several of their co-workers/former co-workers dying throughout the war. They've watched Harry and his year recently take their NEWTs and the future of the world is really in their hands as they educate the youth of today.

We have characters of every generation cast already, from students to Aunt Muriel who would hex you if you asked her age (but is quite happy to tell you it if she'd like you to give her your seat!). Irma Pince, Minerva McGonagall, Aunt Muriel Beamish, Rita Skeeter, Gawain Robards, Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy, Andromeda Tonks, Kingsley Shacklebolt, Sibyll Trelawney are all around waiting for their contemporaries to come join them.

We are also recasting and casting various characters of Harry's generation or thereabouts. Any of these would be wonderful to have around, and there's someone from just about every House, too!

Theodore Nott, a recast who has just finished his NEWTs. He was interning in the Department of Mysteries and now much figure out what to do with himself.

Blaise Zabini, a recast who left England to move to Africa to be with his mother and her latest (still not dead) husband. He planned to finish his education there.

Cho Chang, a recast who recently received her NEWTs and was considering joining the Healer program with St. Mungos.

Morag Macdougal, a recast who recently reviewed her NEWTs and had been interning at the Department of Mysteries.

Penelope Clearwater, a recast who is currently working at Scrivenshaft's and lives in a flat about the shop. She was considering employment options because she was starting to realize that working in a shop wasn't challenging enough for her. She also is looking for her family, who ran to hide during the war to the actions against Muggleborns. Penny, a halfblood, was led to believe that anyone with Muggle blood would have to register or be sent to prison, so she snapped her wand and went to hide in the Muggle world during the war.

Zacharias Smith, a recast who shares a house with Ernie Macmillan and Hannah Abbott (both played). He recently got his NEWT scores and has to decide what to do with his life. He works part-time at Twilfit & Tattings and has some issues with his parents, especially his father.

Victoria Frobisher and Demelza Robins are Gryffindors in Ginny's year. Victoria was working towards organizing a memorial garden at Hogwarts for the victims of the war and Demelza was dealing with her sexuality and thoughts of post-school plans.

Miles Bletchley, Sally Ann Perks, Augustus Pye, Marietta Edgecombe, Stephen Cornfoot, Kevin Entwhistle, and others are also open for development and exploration.

[livejournal.com profile] road_ahead is a post-DH RPG that started in October 2007 (real time). The current date in-game is March 1999. The focus of the RPG is characterization and interaction, so it's not really a game for people who prefer crack or shipping/smut or dark games. The Mods are active and involved, and they provide general guiding plots while also considering/approving personal plots or suggestions for events/game-wide plots. It's a game that focuses on the day to day of life post-DH. There are a variety of players from all over the world with different experience levels (from brand new to RP to years of experience in RPs). It's a friendly bunch who are open to play and plotting. We don't do wank/drama or cliques here.

Tempted and want to apply? Our rules are here and FAQ is here. Still interested? The application is here.

If you have any questions about any of these characters or the game, you can contact the Mods at rarmods@gmail.com or [livejournal.com profile] inell personally at inell1331 on yahoo IM or inell13@gmail.com for email.

*perks up her ears at the mention of Umbridge*

... but is dear, dear Dolores an NPC?

ETA: If she's not available, how would ya'll feel with a sociopathic and fairly dangerous Gilderoy (i.e. one who recovers his memory and while still quite hopeless in a lot of areas, knows his strengths and isn't a very nice person, really).

Dolores is being modded, yes - written by [livejournal.com profile] florahart - but she's in hiding and being creepy and doing lots of nefarious plotting. You should read some of her posts (http://community.livejournal.com/road_ahead/tag/dolores+umbridge). She's creepy as hell, and it is awesome.

And ooh, that sounds like a very interesting take on Gilderoy. If he was reasonably well-functioning and could fit in with the whole 'everyday life' bit of the post-DH world, like trying to readjust to society and the changes and finding ways to turn it to his advantage, or whatever, I'm sure he'd be very welcome.

Take a look at the FAQ and those links at the bottom of the page if you're interested in more. Inell doesn't bite, if you want to ask questions of a modly type, but you can get me on YIM at goat_with_a_breadknife if you want, too :).

That's fine about Dolores. Her posts look awesome, and I'll read asap.

I've checked out the faq a bit, and I'll read more closely. I'm reasonably sure that Gilderoy would want to be on Dolores' side if she wasn't in hiding now. Why? He likes power, even if he's not particularly anti-Muggle-borns.

ETA: And yeah, he'd be pretty well-functioning - just with some holes in his long-term memory, and maybe some physical problems at times (migraines, blackouts, etc.) that aren't really understood or treatable.

:D Thanks for posting about this game!
