Title: Quill
Characters: Rita Skeeter, omniscent saleswoman.
Rating: G
Word Count: 304. For the
fanfic100 prompt 001: Beginnings
She buys the acid-green quill with her first paycheque. She’s looking for something, anything to replace the office-issue dictoquill provided by Witch Weekly for their newest office junior. Rita Skeeter - eighteen years old and fresh out of Hogwarts - doesn’t make do with standard-issue anything.
Do you really think that’s practical, Marguerite? she imagines her mother asking. Then, not imagined, the memory: Your father and I aren’t prepared to help you out with everything anymore. You have to learn to fend for yourself.
Well, she thinks. Sod off, Mother. She steps into Flourish and Blotts’ stationery section.
She sees it immediately. It’s the only time in her life she’ll ever admit to anything close to love at first sight. It’s standing in a glass cabinet in front of a mirror, and she approaches slowly, as if it might disappear. It seems to quiver in the light as she stares. The nib is golden, the feather long, even, and patterned with the markings of whatever bird it came from.
“It’s pheasant,” says a voice behind her as if reading her thoughts, and Rita turns. The saleswoman is mid-fifties, elegantly dressed in a black suit skirt. “18 carat gold-plated nib. It’s a Quick-Quotes one-of-a-kind, like its brother there.” Rita glances back, and sees the ornate peacock quill beside it. She hadn’t even noticed it. The saleswoman speaks again.” You can use regular ink with it, or use the built in inking charm, which will be good for about ten years. We can replace the charm when it wears out.”
Rita has hardly any voice. “How much?”
“Thirty-five Galleons.”
Thirty-five? That’s almost all of her paycheque.
“The quill chooses the reporter,” says the saleswoman.
“I’m not a reporter,” Rita replies.
The woman smiles. Rita sees something glimmering in her eyes. “Oh,” she says, “You will be.”
