My friend had her baby yesterday! A boy, Ethan Conor. Both are doing well. Can't wait to see them :)

02. Your favorite book

Goblet of Fire. Restrospectively, at least. I tend not to be particularly discerning when actually reading - I get completely sucked into the story and, unless it's completely terrible, love it. I loved every single one of the HP books while reading. It was only later on that I began to notice the problems in each book as well.

But yes. Goblet, for certain. The plot is wonderful. It's chunky and that feels right for it - lots of stuff happens, unlike in OOTP, really. We get introduced to a whole bunch of new, interesting characters, thanks to the tournament, and the focus starts to become a little more about the world at large and less about Harry and his immediate circle of family/friends. We get the absolutely brutal climax with Cedric's death (kill the spare) and the revelation of Snape as a double agent.

Also, it has Rita Skeeter in it. And although I didn't love her the first time through, I'm sure it's fairly obvious to everyone how much of a hold she got on me later ;).

While I felt that Goblet of Fire really build the world and gave us a glimpse of Wizarding culture beyond Hogwarts, I really felt this book had the lamest plot of them all. I mean, the whole tournament is a rouse to get Harry to Portkey to a cemetery to revive the Dark Lord. But, then again, it does highlight the fact that wizards have no logic.

But, I, like you, love the characters that we met and the way that the world expanded. Despite the lame plot, it's my second favorite after HBP.

As you have probably read my take on this question, you know I agree with you about the welcome change of focus away from the close range of the school!
Rita grew on me after I had seen her so very well impersonated in the movie!

That's pretty much what happened with me. My Rita love and my Miranda love grew simultaneously and exponentially as soon as the Rita promo pics started popping up *g*

I mean, how can you not love a perfectly coiffed and manicured bitch in a dragon skin jacket?
